Start with changing the bulbs. Of course you shouldn't confine this to just the cooking area. You need to change your incandescent lights along with energy-saver, compact fluorescent light bulbs. These bulbs are usually energy-efficient which means electricity consumption is definitely lower, and, while they cost a bit more to buy, will outlast an incandescent light ten times over. One of the extras is that for every one of these lightbulbs used, it ensures that approximately ten normal lightbulbs less will end up at a landfill site. Coupled with different light bulbs, you should learn to leave the lights off when they are not needed. In the kitchen is where you'll usually discover members of a family, and often the lights are not turned off until the last person goes to bed. Obviously this also happens in other rooms, not merely the kitchen. Do an exercise if you like; have a look at how much electricity you can save by turning the lights off as soon as you don't need them.
From the above it ought to be obvious that just in the kitchen, by itself, there are many little opportunities for saving energy and money. Green living just isn't that difficult. It's related to being practical, more often than not.
